Learning to Hook-in

Learning something new can be punishing!

Learning the very basic windsurfing skill of hooking-in to the harness lines and footstraps is hard the first time you try it. Everybody seems to forget -- or wants to forget -- what its like to be a clueless beginner. This makes windsurfing very humiliating when you first start out, because everyone you see out on the water has been doing it for years.

This is a rather funny video of me back in January (2010), making lots of (what now seem obvious) mistakes and falling in a lot. I post this here for the benefit of other beginners, to provide them with a bit of light hearted encouragement.

I love this. I've come back to windsurfing after a 20yr break ,´╗┐ and this video show exactly what I was doing this last weekend. Boom too high, harness lines too floppy, (belly too big). I tired myself out too early. Next trick is getting your feet in the straps without falling in, getting catapulted, going upwind....

While it may seem a bit narcissistic to post such embarrassing videos of myself online, my motivation for videoing sessions was so I could figure out what I was doing wrong. It takes a lot to overcome the almost daily humiliation of being a beginner - particularly if you thought you were much more competent because you windsurfed when you were younger - but then I figured that was exactly the point, when you are getting back into a sport like windsurfing and finding it all really hard, it helps to see that lots of other newbies make all the same mistakes. Sharing this online helps, particularly if there are only a few beginners like you in your area. I think its also interesting now to look back and see how quickly I progressed with regular time on the water. Just got to nail my gybes.

Best of luck barload ;)

Great video. I am also learning how to hook-in and I'm realising that its much harder than it looks! When you ask someone about it, they say they can't remember how they do it, or its difficult to explain. This video shows what I've been doing wrong and has been a great help! My tip is to try when the wind isn't too strong, as trying to hook in when you're going fast is pretty´╗┐ scary!
